With more and more people suffering from asthma, many of us are starting to look around and see what lifestyle changes we can make to improve our own wellbeing. Many people who suffer from asthma have found that their homes are an extremely aggravating factor in their respiratory wellness, and that just being in the so-called comfort of their own homes can be the worst thing for them. One very simple step you can take is to not allow any smoking in your home. Second hand smoke is full of toxins and can be harmful for anyone’s health, not just asthmatics, and particles cling to internal furnishings, causing problems long after the cigarette has been stubbed out.
Another thing you can do is to look up – and take care of your ceilings. Mould grows easily on damp surfaces and it can be all too easy to neglect your ceilings. Make sure you wipe down any damp ones regularly to prevent the growth of harmful spores.
Pillows and mattresses in the home should be laundered regularly to get rid of dust mites and other lurking nasties which can contribute to asthma. In addition to this, we spend so much of our time in our beds that it is important to ensure that they provide a hygienic surface for us at all times.
Flooring is also vitally important as dust can gather here quite easily. Carpets are the worst offenders for this, so if you must have carpets then try to choose an asthma specific type of carpeting. Hardwood floors are the best and can be cleaned easily. No matter what type of floor you have, ensure that you vacuum at least once per week.
